I belong to AIGA because I believe in the organization’s commitment to the design profession. I’m not in it for the coupons. I believe you get out of it what you put in. That said, I can, but I’m not going to wax poetic here. I want to say this to the squeaky wheels that complain about not getting their money’s worth out of their membership dues.
In May I was laid off from my job of five years. During my unemployment I did not find one job opening or posting of any significance online or through my network of colleagues. The current job market in Las Vegas is as bad if not worse than it is in most cities. I got a job this week BECAUSE OF AIGA. I had my portfolio online with AIGA, a reputable company in town went there to find designers, and I got the call. In what could have been a desperate situation for me, AIGA saved the day. All of the inspiration, camaraderie and professional skills I’ve gained from this group were already enough to make me a believer, but it went the extra mile for me this week and got me a job when that was all that mattered.
