Life long friends I met at the AIGADC meetings and various groups. On the Board of Directors for many years in the 70s, 80s and 90s. That’s where the action is in our design community. Got to know many designers in DC and the metro area by designing and producing our journal for over 5 years. Many members designed the covers and got to know some through interviews.

If you are a graphic designer or in the arts, join the AIGADC and start enjoying your profession.

As a student of a small, womens only institution, AIGA was my way of ‘holding my own’ amongst very accomplished, outspoken women. I volunteered to become our AIGA Student Group President in a moment of spontaneity but this decision opened a world of design that I really couldn’t have tapped into otherwise. I embraced AIGA‘s inspiration more that year which led to my best work for my senior year of college.

2
Now I’m graduated and in the real working world as a design associate. It isn’t the big, posh design firm some may dream of – but I know I wouldn’t be here, with a job, shortly after graduation, if it weren’t for the connections I made during AIGA.

1
When I moved to Houston from Chicago, my Chicago crew thought I was nuts, but a girl can only be so many miles away from her lil sis. I counted down the days til I would pack my bags and return to Chicago, but something changed my perception of Houston…AIGA. It only took me 1.5 years to finally make the commitment, and I’m hooked. I started as Member Activities Chair on the Houston board from day 1, a new roll that has been a success and now molded into a community awareness position both for members and the community beyond.

During my term as MAC, I held a social that would later lead to the missing piece in my love for Houston and my love for my industry. My current boss was at one of our socials I hosted, and if it wasn’t for AIGA, she would have never seen my dedicated involvement and commitment to engage the Houston design community. AIGA opened one of many doors for me and now is now proudly listed on the back of my business card. I have an amazing job [especially in this economy], an amazing city to call home, and most of all, an amazing, selfless community of designers and creative thinkers. I still love you Chicago, but this love is long term.

2
I had a very rewarding term as MAC on the board, and now I am now stepping into the presidents role, one that I take with great honor and pride. My long term aspiration is to change the perception of Houston nationally. We are more than just a city of Oil & Gas, cowboy boot wearn’, truck drivin’, gun shootn’, country music lovn’ Southerners! We are a diverse, cultivated community of every median possible, and we’re not afraid to help one another [this is were the southern charm plays a key role].

Our board is on the verge of becoming one pulsating whole that will extend out to our members and then engage the community beyond. It is my determination to bring more business to Houston through my love for design and my passion for community engagement. Involvement from all aspects of all medians, becoming one voice. Connecting all medians to work with each other not just for profit, but for self and community improvement. It starts with one idea and lots of help, and through reaching out to the community for engagement, nothing is limitless.

Six years ago, I attended AIGA / LA chapter’s gathering, when they invited Dawn Ahmed of Scion to give a talk on how Scion brand was launched. It dramatically changed how I saw brands. Six years later, I’m working with fortune 500 companies to shape their brand experiences and always inspired by how a straight company like Toyota can give birth to a fun and flexible brand like Scion.

2
Thanks to AIGA / LA, the impact you brought to a young designer is now reflecting on how some of the world’s most influential brands interact with their customers.

1
After seeing the latest film from design great Milton Glaser at the “open air” theatre with AIGA in LA, I reconnected up with what is great in those who design and believe in quality art, and, I returned to my studio and reconnected with Glaser’s “list” of which I have always tried to model my work and partnerships.

Reminded me of working with Milton Glaser while in the East and adopting his “List of 10″ things that Glaser had learned and shared during his career. The number ONE thing that he lists is “You can only work with people you like”. This is true in how you and your art are both working to solve a client’s issues…you can produce quality design solutions really only if you enjoy working with the partners you are helping or collaborating. Simple, do you like the people you are working with?

The AIGA is full of this type of collaboration. I hope to always be involved with, work with, and learn with the folks that LOVE their art or path in life.
