Moving from design student to professional is intimidating. But knowing that I have an arsenal of quality information, events, inspiration, colleagues, educators and others, I know I’m going to be okay.

I’ve lowered my cholesterol!

Made you look. Ah, the devices of advertising.

Truthfully, whether it’s a lecture, a paper show, a networking event, or a happy hour, the AIGA gatherings I attend always have me walking away feeling healthier. Actually, it’s more than a feeling. It’s an appreciable sense of belonging and contributing to a community. AIGA is an advantageous resource. And, it contains no trans fats.

I have been an active member in AIGA since 2004. I began as a student and now am a chair on the Baltimore Chapter Board. AIGA has allowed me to tweak my creativity and flex my design muscles. The many events that AIGA Baltimore puts on every year have shaped my life; from the student portfolio review (which helped prepare me for my first job interviews) to the BLEND Happy Hour events that helped me find the job I have now. Talking to other creatives and hearing their stories helps keep me moving forward as a designer. No where else can I find so many of my peers… my people…my crew…my soul mates. I don’t ever plan on not being an active member of AIGA, no matter where I go, or what I do. They are my creative family.

And not just that. I *am* the cool kid.

My local chapter makes me feel like a star when I show new design work. They say my name ‘Norm!’-style when I arrive to events. My ideas, no matter how nascent or far-reaching, are interesting to them. And when I hang with other AIGA members, I just overall feel like I’m a part of something bigger than day-to-day design. It’s, umm, cool.

Plus, I’ve met some of my very best friends through AIGA. I’ve gained incredible amounts of leadership experience by serving on the board. More design knowledge has come to me via AIGA than any other post-college resource. My membership means something to my employers (and future employers!). And I feel like my best interests are well-represented in government. Really! I (heart) AIGA.
