Volunteering for AIGA, while time-consuming, was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my professional career. I started as the events coordinator, although I had no real interest in coordinating events. But because of this position, I got face time with Chip Kidd, David Carson and other amazing designers, all giving me great advice and inspiring me to keep doing what I’m doing and be the best.

I married an amazing man.

I traveled to Cuba and Venezuela where I Shared Dreams with people I will never forget.

I am now a partner at a small design studio, with my husband, two things I never dreamed I’d do.

Trust me… I’m a designer.

Because of AIGA… I found a network of supportive, open and talented designers in my community. Because of AIGA… I found confidence as a designer. Joining as a member and subsequently participating on our local AIGA board has been the single most important decision in my career as a designer.

I am currently attending the Art Institute of Colorado and they just started (or restarted) their AIGA Student club. With this group I have been able to attend many events in the area, a Debbie Millman lecture, a sneak peak at the DAM’s newest exhibit, various happy hours to meet and mingle with other AIGA members. I feel that with this membership I have a community of people (more than I even know) that are there for me, rooting for me to succeed.

Friends that last a lifetime.

Because of AIGA, I have built friendships that I know I will retain for the remainder of my life. Together, as a community, we have moved mountains and knocked down barriers. We’ve rallied the Colorado design community and we’ve built new bridges, inspired students and seasoned designers and we’ve made people ask questions and have started the dialog that will shape the evolution of design.

Because of AIGA, I’ve come to realize the world is small. As a leader within AIGA, I’ve come to know other leaders in other chapters and have been inspired. Inspired to inspire others and continually do better as a designer throughout my lifetime. AIGA members are approachable, thoughtful and inspiring. I love AIGA.

I grew professionally with AIGA.

Mike Joose told his story about how he got involved with AIGA, it resonated with me. I to was a guy in the corner attending events and then some how I got involved volunteering and then was asked to do events programming, which then that led to a presidency. It sort of snowballed, and like any good avalanche its fast, furious and scary. With that said though I am grateful for the challenge and opportunity. I love that AIGA helps me do more with my career than just take a paycheck home.

I am inspired at what this org has done and where it is going. I am also appreciative in its spirit that seeks out people and mentors them; believes in and supports them to do more. To step out and give. That’s the best part. I have learned and am learning so much about others and myself and the power of design itself to help make the world a better place. Thanks AIGA.
