AIGA works with the State of Oregon to place design thinkers where it matters most. These creatives work alongside legal and political professionals planning the systems which Oregonians use to participate in their government.

Universities do great things with mushy design student brains, but if they aren’t careful they can sap the fun out of design. And in extreme cases, they can make it downright scary. I recall reading an essay about design education in Looking Closer 3. In this essay, the author lamented the fact that he’s had to let go talented designers because their fear of failure caused them to freeze whenever they were faced with a blank page.

I have never experienced this kind of fear, but in my early days of college I did find design to be intimidating, even to the point of considering changing majors. If my university did not have a fairly active student AIGA chapter to prop me up, expose me to non-academic design folks, engage me in community design projects, and otherwise just give me a tribe, I would probably be programming Linux applications right now, authoring books, making two or three times as much money…

No, wait.

Okay, so I don’t plan on being rich or famous as a graphic designer. I do plan on being happy, though. The way I see it, AIGA has kept me from a future with lots of money but not a lot of happiness. More than anything else, that’s why I am a member.
