I’ve always loved the story of graphic design. History of graphic design was my first design class in college. That class blew my mind, totally. Since then, I’ve tried to “stand on the shoulders of giants” as much as possible in my design career. AIGA keeps that history alive so that designers like me have a resource available for decades to come.

2
AIGA also teamed up to host the awesomest trivia contest of all time, Mano-A-Mano. Because of AIGA, I had the pleasure of competing with Seattle’s best and brightest design minds. When the dust cleared, I was still there standing strong, winning the competition. Thank you AIGA, for making design history geeks cool. I need all the help I can get!

Burnout.

It’s every designers worst fear. As a student you learn about it – but never truly believe you’ll get the sickness. As a professional, I’ve found I fight it every few months. I thought the Burnout virus was something like a fatal illness – once you have it, you’re done for. Luckily, the sickness turns out to be more like a chronic disease – it’s going to happen every so often, and you have to beat it off with a stick.

AIGA is that stick, the medicine, and the mother that nurses me back to good design health. It’s my best friend, who gives me support and confidence and inspiration and worth. It’s whatever I need whenever I need it and keeps me going when I absolutely think I can’t go any further. Truth is, I simply would not still be a designer today if it weren’t for AIGA.

Like minds meet one another.

It is probably safe to say we’re all a touch off. While our parents might not understand what we do, the people of AIGA understand why we do. Engrossing ourselves in such a community is an invaluable incubator for creativity to us all.
