Because of AIGA, I try harder to be a better designer, due to the practice of standards, the awareness of competition and the sparks of inspiration.

Because of AIGA, I’ve been able to work, play and grow with local professional designers in St. Louis, Chicago, Miami and Washington, DC, meet nationally successful designers on a regular basis, join a design tour through China, and attend a business course for designers at Yale. So by design, as I grow, so does AIGA, and vice versa.

Because of AIGA, I met the greatest gal in the world!

4 years later, we are happily married and both active in the organization – me on the local board, her on the national board… #aigaconnect is the perfect tag in this case!

As I typed these words “Design history lives in us,” it hit me all of a sudden. Every member of AIGA and including myself are responsible for passing on the history of design. The past, present and future of design is all made possible by the efforts of many.

AIGA is a great place to get information about the past, present and future of design. Whether it is though aiga.org, local/regional aiga events or through being able to network with peers. AIGA is the hub that allows us to stay connected no matter where we are in our design careers.

I got involved with AIGA when I was in college. I joined as a student member and have been contributing to the association since then. After moving to DC, I felt the need to connect with other like-minded individuals in my area. My job and the projects I was working on weren’t enough to keep me satisfied, so I went to an AIGA DC happy hour and was warmly welcomed by a board member. From that point on I was hooked. Volunteering wasn’t enough. I wanted more, so I joined the DC board of directors and have been serving my local community ever since.

This year I’m taking on the presidency in DC where I’ll be instituting more advocacy and public awareness initiatives. That is my goal. I want my community to know that design is more than just pretty pictures. It solves problems. It inspires thinking. It creates discussion. It allows for critical analysis. It advances education. It’s meaningful.

We are all AIGA. We drive design and we can only do it together.
