As an evolving member in AIGA Wisconsin and now a new member to the communication committee I have more inspiration than ever before.

One step at a time I am influenced to make a bigger footprint on the design community. AIGA enabled me to become not only a better designer but has opened up endless possibilities to my career and connections.

2
Through my design career I thrive to be a mentor to others, through AIGA I have and will continue to make an impact on my community.

As members we all work towards the same vision of AIGA one speaker, one event, one member at a time.

Being a new member to the AIGA Wisconsin Communications Committee, I never knew how great of an impact a single person could have on an entire community. After getting to experience just a glimpse of the “behind the scenes” process, I can truly say that it is the motivation, inspiration and ideas of individuals that make any organization, especially AIGA, such a success. Everyone works together, but each member has a voice.

2
It’s great to know mine is heard.

1
My school wasn’t introduced to AIGA until my current graphic design chair was hired for the 2009-2010 school year. She told us all about them in our Spring 2010 semester, but we didn’t get the ball running until later that summer. My graduating class (six girls altogether) took on a leadership role and started our school’s chapter. I volunteered to be president, despite not having any real leadership experience. I can honestly can say this is the best decision I’ve ever made.
2
Not only were we able to start our own on-campus organization for graphic design, we were able to start a voice for the art community at our school. Our chapter hosts gallery nights and bake sales to help provide funding and essentially a voice for our department. (We are currently trying to get a better student lounge in our art building.) AIGA taught me how important it is to make a change and I am proud to say that I am a member.

The value of AIGA has little relevance to any membership fee. Simply put, when you put more in, you get more out. That may seem logical, and yes, it is.

Personally, AIGA gave me the opportunity to be a benefactor, a mentor, even a leader. I’ve grown. Not only as a designer, but as a person. The people I’ve met have given me inspiration. I’ve rediscovered my community. I’ve somehow managed to connect with people all over the country who I consider friends, who I respect, and who I look forward to growing with. Last month, I had breakfast with Michael Gericke of Pentagram.

2
AIGA gives us the power to change our profession. It also gives us people.

Try putting a price on that.

The phrase “When it rains it pours” is actually a branding term used by the Morton Salt Company many many years ago. Morton found a way to engineer their salt to not stick together when it was humid out. Thus, when it was raining out, the salt would still pour. Very interesting! I got this little nugget of information from Debbie Millman’s presentation at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Thanks Debbie, I will now proceed impress my friends when I drop all that knowledge on them.

I moved alone from Chattanooga, TN to Milwaukee, WI to teach at UW-Milwaukee. I love the students and teachers at UWM, but I needed a friend base, support group, and to fill out my creative and professional life here in Milwaukee. Being included on the AIGA Wisconsin board here (after having served in Chattanooga, which was also incredible) has been an infinite boon for me, and I have learned so so so much doing the work. I am very appreciative to Amy Decker and all of the board for making my life here much richer in experience than it would have been otherwise.

As an in-house designer running a one-person creative department for a statewide nonprofit healthcare provider I don’t interact with any other creatives during my work day. Thankfully the designers I come in contact with through AIGA have kept me interested and informed beyond my workplace, my local region, the non-profit sector or in-house community. Thanks AIGA!

2
Because of AIGA… I am able to bridge the gap between the rock star designers in print magazines and those creating the other 99.9% of the work out there. I’ve had the pleasure of talking to many of these world-class designers and whether they’re on stage or in the audience they’re proud AIGA members. In the end they simply show designers what they’re capable of.

1
With AIGA we are more than just a bunch of artists trying to make a living. When we unite to face the challenges of upholding the integrity of this profession from being diluted by “people with computers”, we have a Purpose. AIGA gives us the backbone we need to teach others the value of good design. AIGA builds a community where designers of all types can come together to network, share ideas, get inspired, and even socialize with like-minded people. And, among many other things, AIGA stands up for design, and designers, against anything that threatens to devalue our work and profession. Therefore, because of AIGA, I am more than just an artist trying to make boring stuff look cool, I am a graphic designer who has a Purpose beyond mere Aesthetics.

2
Personally, AIGA has given me something to get involved in that truly matters to me. I can attend an event here or there and become inspired, motivated, educated, or even just entertained. Or I can get involved with my chapter and help decide what my design community looks like, feels like, and does for its members. Either way I’ll still have the opportunity to connect with other people and to build lasting relationships, both personally and professionally. In the end though, just like with everything else in life, you’ll get out of it what you put into it – and I get a lot. Thank you AIGA.
